The word “Trinity” (meaning three) is not found in the Bible. Yet, the idea or the concept of the Divine Trinity does occur in more than one place in the Bible. The Trinity is an important doctrine in Christian teaching. It refers to the Trinity being made up of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. But it maintains the concept of only one God, not three Gods. Admittedly, this is a concept difficult for the human mind to comprehend. The Bible does not try to explain it but simply declares it. Genesis 1:26a states: Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us” (NLT). Note the use of the plurals “us and our” which shows more than one aspect to the nature of God. Also, the baptism of Jesus marked the beginning of his earthly ministry. Mark 1:10, 11 states: “As Jesus came up out of the water, he saw the heavens splitting apart and the Holy Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice from heaven said, ‘You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy’”(NLT). In this example all three persons of the Trinity are there: Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is descending, the Father is speaking, and Jesus is being baptized. Jesus’ Apostles were to “go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit” Matthew 28:19 (NLT). Finally, in 2 Corinthians 13:14 the Apostle Paul closed his letter with: “the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all” (NLT). The Trinity is a mystery to human understanding. it nevertheless is clearly revealed in the Bible as true and must be accepted as trustworthy.
