KISS Christianity

Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS) as a general rule of success applies to many if not most aspects of life. Hardly anywhere has KISS been more ignored than within the realm of Christianity.

Jesus Christ never intended that following Him should be a complicated, mysterious process. Paul, one of His chosen Apostles, spoke to this in 2 Corinthians 11:3 saying: “But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ” (KJV). The main idea related to the Greek word “haplotes” translated as “simplicity” is that of being single-minded in contrast to being double-minded. They were becoming enamored with false teachers (v. 13) who were not following the KISS principle thereby perverting the simple facts of the Gospel of Christ.

Paul was all about keeping the main thing, the main thing. In his first letter to Christians in Corinth, Paul reminded them about what was of first importance. “Now I make known to you brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and the He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures (1 Corinthians 15:1-4).

Without these facts as the basis for all Christian teaching, one has no good news, i.e., gospel. Paul’s emphasis here is that what is most important is taught first and that it is taught first because it is the most important. Furthermore, it is not complicated. It is KISS. While not simplistic, it is nevertheless simple. Any manifestations of Christianity that begin elsewhere or that deny these truths, corrupts and perverts the very essence of the Christian faith.
